Gets a driver licence
Ravi wants to get his driver licence so he can drive in Australia.
He completes an online Driver Knowledge Test and then goes to Service NSW to apply for his learner licence.
A community organisation helps Ravi complete supervised driving lessons. When he has completed the required number of hours and feels ready, he completes the online Hazard Perception Test. He then does a driving test at Service NSW and receives his Provisional (P1) licence.
After 12 months, Ravi gets his Provisional (P2) licence. Two years after that, he gets his full licence.
Accesses mental health support
Ravi has been feeling sad and stressed. He visits his doctor for support. His doctor refers him to a mental health professional so he can get help to feel better.
Ravi starts seeing a psychologist at the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS). This service is free and confidential.
Ravi also learns about how to get urgent mental health support if he needs it.
Rents a share house
Ravi is looking for a new place to live. He knows housing is expensive in NSW, so he plans to rent a property with his friend and share the costs.
They search for properties online and attend many property inspections. They find a suitable property and complete an application form. Unfortunately, they are unsuccessful so need to try again.
Eventually, their application is accepted on an apartment, so they pay a rental bond and sign a lease.
Ravi and his friend share the rental costs and work out who will do each of the jobs around the property. They also talk about how they will pay and share the bills for services such as electricity and internet.
The NSW Government provides Ravi with rental support payments to help with the cost of the bond and rent.
Attends TAFE
Ravi wants to work in hospitality and decides to do some training. He searches for courses online and finds a free Hospitality and Culinary course at TAFE NSW.
Ravi checks if the course is available in his area and then applies online.
As part of this course, Ravi completes an apprenticeship at a restaurant.
Learns about visa sponsorship
Ravi wants to reunite with his partner, who lives in his home country. He receives free support from the Legal Aid NSW Refugee Service to help him with the application process.
Ravi applies on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website. He provides identification documents and information about his situation.
