Enrol Hussein in high school
The Khalil family’s caseworker supports them to enrol Hussein in high school.
Hussein is required to join an Intensive English Centre (IEC) for 12 months to learn English and about the education system in Australia.
During enrolment, Hussein completes a short test to assess his English level.
Salwa does an interview to provide information about Hussein’s needs and to learn about the new school.
After 12 months, Hussein moves into regular high school classes.
Rent a new home
Since arriving in NSW, the Khalil family have been staying in short- term accommodation funded by the Australian Government.
Now they need to find a private rental property to live in. The family consider their budget and location. They start looking for a property close to the children’s schools.
The family get help through a rental agency and their community to find a suitable property. They find a property they like and complete an application.
Their application is successful, so they pay the rental bond and sign the lease. They fill in a condition report and set up their electricity, gas, and internet. Their caseworker helps them get furniture for their new home.
Receive aged care support for Fatima
Ali is a full-time carer for Fatima and supports her with daily activities at home.
Ali and Fatima decide to get support through the Australian Government’s aged care services, called My Aged Care. Ali provides information about Fatima’s medical needs so they can receive financial support.
Ali also receives counselling from a local mental health professional to support his wellbeing as a carer.
Start a small business
Salwa is starting a catering business. She enrols in a small business program recommended by her case worker.
After completing the program, Salwa registers her business name and receives an Australian Business Number (ABN) from the Australian Government.
Get their Australian citizenship
The Khalil family has lived in Australia for four years and can become Australian citizens. They apply online and receive an invitation to sit the citizenship test.
Adult members of the family attend citizenship classes to prepare for the test. They complete the test and attend an interview to confirm their identity and application details.
After passing the test, they attend a citizenship ceremony in their local area and receive their certificates.
